This lyric was written in 1989 at a time in my life where I had to make a choice. I had been hanging on to a 4 year memory in the hope that the impossible could happen. There was so much stuff happening in those years. I had left the music industry. I thought I was in love. Travelled overseas for the first time. Started working at an airline. Went on a second, then third overseas trip. Realised that maybe I needed to let go and move on. This song expresses the process of emotionally unwinding from something that I had maybe held onto for too any years...

Lyrics

Am I hanging on
Hanging on
Hanging on
To a memory
A memory

I used to be so certain
I used to be so sure of myself
Then you tore the curtain
You stole my heart and nobody could tell

Am I just
Hanging on to a memory
Blinded in the past by some incredible dream
Hanging on to a memory
Am I fooling myself or is it stark reality
Is it just a memory
Hanging on to a memory
To a memory

Everyone is looking for someone
I thought someone was you
Now I’m not so sure that I’m seeing it right
Can you tell me if my feelings are true

Or am I just
Hanging on to a memory
Blinded in the past by some incredible dream
Hanging on to a memory
Am I fooling myself or is it stark reality
Is it just a memory
Hanging on to a memory
To a memory

Am I hanging on
Hanging on
Hanging on
To a memory
A memory

Like a fool led down the alleyway
I’ve been hanging on the edge of a dream
You were all I ever thought of
Filling my life, you were all I could taste and see

Am I just
Hanging on to a memory
Blinded in the past by some incredible dream
Hanging on to a memory
Am I fooling myself or is it stark reality
Is it just a memory
Hanging on to a memory
To a memory

Am I hanging on
Hanging on
Hanging on
To a memory
A memory
