This lyric was originally written in 1988, and explores a similar theme to the opening track of the album, albeit from a different perspective. Since the beginning of time, mankind has been out to impress. To do better, bigger, bolder things in the name of progress, wealth and power. This song is from the point of view of God, in that everything we try under our own steam means absolutely nothing to Him. The only thing that counts in life is actually something that is immaterial - the way we live, love, treat and take care of our fellow human beings - and this world we live in.
Hope is never hopeless when the hope is in the truth.
