From the recording Freshman 61
I absolutely love this track! It has been a bit of a labour getting this one right both lyrically and musically, and it went through quite a number of revisions before I was happy with the outcome.
Originally starting out as "Just Give Me Love" and written in 1984, I just couldn't get it to come together as a complete package. Almost, but never quite right. I was originally approaching it as a straight blues song, but somehow could just not get it to sit right. The verses were there, but I couldn't match a chorus or bridge to complete what I wanted it to say.
It is about someone who gets everything offered and thrown at their feet - money, fame, fortune - the "universe", but it never satisfies. They are looking for love. A love full of promises and not the empty lies they have experienced all their life. They want something more. So they reject the lies and keep looking..
I have quite a few of those earlier variations sitting on my laptop, but very happy that this result finally made the cut. Very bluesy, rocky, commercial and just a little bit out there. Absolutely love it.
Lyrics
You can give me your car
Whatever you think I would like
You can give me the world
I’ll just say go take a hike
I'm just looking for love
One true love with no strings and no ties
I'm just looking for love
Love full of promises and no more empty lies
I'm just looking for love whoa
I'm just looking for love whoa
I'm just looking for love whoa
Just looking for love
You can give me your home
Try and offload your wife
Promise me the universe
I’ll just say get a life
I'm just looking
I'm still looking
I keep looking
I'm just looking for love
I'm just looking
I'm still looking
I keep looking
I'm just looking for love
I'm just looking for love
One true love with no strings and no ties
I'm just looking for love
Love full of promises and no more empty lies
I'm just looking for love whoa
I'm just looking for love whoa
I'm just looking for love whoa
Just looking for love
Everything I'm searching for
And nothing that I've found
Ever really satisfies
When love is not around
I'm just looking for love
One true love with no strings and no ties
I'm just looking for love
Love full of promises and no more empty lies
I'm just looking for love whoa
I'm just looking for love whoa
I'm just looking for love whoa
Just looking for love
I'm just looking
I'm still looking
I keep looking
I'm just looking for love
I'm just looking
I'm still looking
I keep looking
I'm just looking for love
Love love whoa
Love love whoa
Love love whoa
I'm just looking for love
