From the recording Gotta Start Somewhere
My favourite track on this album. Originally written in 1985, I tweaked it lyrically in 2025 (40 years to write a song??).
The song speaks about our lifestyle choices - some which might be fun at the time, but you end up paying the price eventually. Don't be fooled by others just because of their fame or lifestyle, as it's often a hollow facade that they themselves can't live up to.
The chorus implores listeners to think about their choices, offering the option to open up their hearts, renew their outlook on life, and let love shine.
Lyrics
I hear of your fashions
And late night passions
But it really doesn’t influence me
You party on
‘Til the night is almost gone
Thinking maybe this will set you free
I’ll tell you something it doesn’t last
Next morning sees you out cold on the floor
I hear you say that life is so great
But is it really life at all?
Let love shine
Let it inside
Open up your heart
It could renew your life
Let love shine
Let love shine
You see the stars
Dance moves and big guitars
They’re strutting all around the stage
And you know their lives
Are full of compromise
They can’t live to what it is they say
But that’s no reason why you can’t change
I know you’ve been hurt before
Don’t you see life can be so much better
If you’d just open up the door
Let love shine
Let it inside
Open up your heart
It could renew your life
Let love shine
Let love shine
Let love shine
Let love shine
